Masada is the story of the heroic stand of the Jewish rebels against Rome.
Masada is also the story of the megalomania of king Herod who built his magnificent palaces on the cliff in the desert .
Masada (First cebtury BCE, King Herod, changes and additions 67-72 by the Zelots).
The Masada mosel is the only arceological model in the park that has been partially reconstracted in order to
illustrate the character of the original buildings.
The northern palace
Herod built a palace for his family on the northern side of the plateau, on three rock terraces.
The bathhouse
King Herod's bathhouse at Masada was in the best tradition of Rome.
The reconstraction shows a cross-section of the Tepidarium (tepid bath) and the Caldarium (steam room),where the system for heating the air and water can be seen.
The restored frescoes, based on the original remains, testify to the opulence of the Herodian period.
The Synagogue
Masada's synagogue is one of the most ancient discovered in Israel,and dates to the period of the second temple.
The reconstraction shows the changes made by the Zealots, who created a geniza (A STORAGE AREA FOR WORN SACRED SCROLLS) in the floor of the building.
The Western Palace (The Administrative Palace)
This is the largest building on Masada,from which the fortress was administered when King Herod was present.
During the siege , families of the rebels lived in the palace.Peek into the model to see the mosaics from King
Herod's time, a cooking stove, and a bathtub built by the rebels.
